The West Society

The West Society of Meharry Medical College recognizes individuals who have provided documentation to the college that they have included Meharry in their estate plans.

This society is named in honor of Dr. Harold D. West Sr., the first African-American president of Meharry Medical College. A visionary, Dr. West spearheaded a $20-million-dollar national fundraising campaign in 1959 that doubled the endowment and increased grants for training, research and public service tenfold. Dr. West's leadership tripled the faculty and tremendously increased sponsored research.

Meharry Medical College has received planned and deferred gifts from its alumni and friends since the late 1960s, a significant source of long-term financial support for Meharry-particularly in increasing its endowment. Members of The West Society are individuals who have made documented planned or deferred gift commitments to Meharry utilizing-but not limited to-gifts by bequest, life insurance, charitable trust arrangements or charitable gift annuity. West Society members will be appropriately recognized for their gifts and listed in the annual Donor Honor Roll (unless a member wishes to remain anonymous).

If you have already included (or are planning to include) Meharry in your estate plans, please let us know. Telling us now allows us to assist you in gaining the greatest benefit from your gift, to plan for Meharry's future based on your deferred commitment and to say "thank you" for your generosity and forethought.
